Bayyinah Tv / Ramadan – Day 2 – Surah Al Hadid Intro & Part 1

Bayyinah Tv - Ramadan Day 2

Day 2 of the Ramadan 2013 Program brings the first of two parts of an exclusive session conducted by Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan on Surah Al-Hadid, which will set the stage for the Musabbihat (3 special surahs) coming up as this month progresses.

1. We are starting with Surat Al Hadid the first surah in the Musabbihat series. Surah hadid is not in the memorization plan but it’s dars is important since it lays down the foundation, sets the right tone for other surahs and is the mother of all the musabbihat.

2. This Dars will give you motivation to memorize more Qur’an in ramadan. It has 29 verses and is the 57th Surah in the mushaf. Surat Al-Ĥadīd means “The Iron”.

3. Along with the durus/ lecture of Surat Al Hadid start memorizing Surat Al Jumu’ah. Content and Lesson wise Ustadh NAK wanted to begin with Hadid.

4. Durus of Al Hadid Begins – U.NAK recites 57:1-6 (First 6 verses of Al Hadid)
Screen Shot 2013-09-10 at 6.04.37 PM6. There are 2 kinds of requirements for understanding/benefitting from the Qur’an.
a) Academic – Learning Arabic Language/ Studying Tafsir / Linguistic Analysis / Tradition / things that require you to ‘study’.
b) Psychological / Spiritual (More important than academic) – These requirements are the harder ones.

7. Someone intelligent can memorize, learn and understand qur’an at a great speed but the psychological requirement or the attitude is not something you can learn or keep forever. The attitude to really benefit from the Qur’an is a “LIFE LONG STRUGGLE” – you gotta fight to maintain the spiritual / psychological requirement.

*Reminding oneself every single time – why am I learning this? Why am I studying tafsir / learning arabic / memorizing these ayaat? What is the point of all of this? -“INTENTION”
Usually the cliche’ answer is – “So that I may be guided”.
WHAT IS GUIDANCE? Everyday we are presented with choices and guidance is the strength to make the right choice. It means that I have to necessarily change the choices I make. Fight the voice inside us that lead me, you & us to failure.
Ex : Should I watch this or not? / Should I retort back or keep quiet? / Should I sleep or wake up?

We are never going to be good enough to obey Allah, you still have to do it.
♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

9. Shaytan does not spare any of us – no one (student of knowledge/ scholar / novice / expert). Qur’an offers us protection “audhu billah mina ‘sh-shaytani ‘r-rajeem”. Seek refuge in Allah whilst reciting the Qur’an else the shaytan –
a) Mess up your reading of the Qur’an – put waswasa/ distract – you wont get the benefit you need to get.
b) One of the reasons you should recite Qur’an is  to get protection against shaytan.

The actual relationship I have with the Qur’an is not when I am listening to a lecture. It is not when I am memorizing. The actual relationship happens when I am standing in Salaat and reciting it. Standing in salaat listening to it being recited. The relationship we have with the Qur’an happens 5 times a day atleast. If somebody’s salaat is good their Qur’an is good. If someone is not engaging with the Qur’an in their salaat then their relationship with the Qur’an is entirely artificial. IT MEANS NOTHING. It is an entirely academic and superficial exercise. REAL QUR’AN HAPPENS IN SALAAT. Everything I learn and everything you learn about this book whether its tajweed/language/tafsir/memorizing this ayaat all of it comes down to “I WILL HAVE A BETTER SALAAT”. If I don’t have better salaat all of this is in vain none of this matters!! Because salaat is officially when you stop talking to everybody else and start talking to Allah in words He taught me – that’s the conversation that matters everything in life is in vain. IF THIS ISNT IN PLACE!
♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

10. Ustadh planned to talk only about the 16th ayah of Hadid but then decided to start from the beginning and end on ayah 16th.

11. After hijrah there is an over all problem in motivation – the emaan is not what it used to be. And Allah has noticed that there are some weak elements in the muslim community.

12. There is the disease of hypocrisy amongst the companions. The beauty of this surah is even though its Madani the first 6 ayahs sound like they are from the Meccan Quran. These ayaat introduce us to Allah (All competent / All Knowing etc..) when this has already been done in the Meccan Qur’an.

13. These first 6 ayaat are not for academic pre-requisite, the muslims are not going to learn anything new that they don’t already know.

2/3rd of the Qur’an is Meccan and most of the Meccan Qur’an is about Eeman and Allah.

14. It seems that the first 6 ayaat are for quraish and the disbelievers but why is Allah telling this to the muslims who already know all this? ALLAH IS MAKING US THINK AND REFLECT UPON IT AGAIN!! We need to start over..

15. Everything in the sky declares Allah’s perfection – “What is wrong with you”?! “What happened to your tasbih”?
He is the Ultimate Authority – “How come my authority is not enough that you dont respect it”?
Full of Wisdom – “Why dont you trust the things I tell you to do, are good for you, why don’t you have any confidence in my wisdom”?
The kingdom of skies and The Earth belongs to Him – “Why are you afraid of your enemy, they have money, power & weapon in their hands, that it will somehow harm you, there is nothing in the skies and the earth that is out of MY KINGDOM”!!
He gives Life & He gives Death – “Why are you afraid of dying”?
He is control of ALL THINGS – “Allah’s power and might is not restrained. He can DO ANYTHING”!

16. We usually call “My Life” – I WANNA LIVE MY LIFE! – Who said its yours? People say “my hand hurts” – its your hand? How much did you pay for it? Where did you get it from, Amazon? 😛 🙂

HE GIVES LIFE AND HE GIVES DEATH (Referring to Allah)..

17. Allah says HE IS THE FIRST AND THE LAST – this has many implications but the least you can do is start and end your day with the thought of Allah. What did I do today for you my master, me this insignificant creature do today for you?

18. Allah is THE ULTIMATELY OBVIOUS – Allah is in the unseen how is He calling himself obvious? The one who believes, they see Allah in everything, they see Allah in His work, creation and planning.
Ex – Something really annoying happens to you – you get stuck in traffic whilst going to an arabic class – you question was this Allah’s plan? Yes, it was. You need to learn patience before you get to learn arabic.

19. The more you describe the greatness of Allah – the more it instills humility inside us. Allah is always with us we are never alone. His company is there He is always watching, observing, testing and protecting constantly. We are NEVER alone.
– I am not alone in a hotel room.
– I am not alone on the Campus.
– I am not alone in a Car.

20.  People who want to look for alien life – who ask “are we alone in this universe?” – we are not alone. And actually we ourselves are aliens 😛 we were sent on this earth. We are not from this place we were sent to this place. If you want to look at aliens look at each other (Lol !! 😀 ). Everyone of you, a part of you is alien. An angel came from the sky and delivered “the rooh” into your mother’s belly.

21. If I realize Allah is with us “The websites we browse will change” – “The phone numbers we dial would change” – EVERYTHING about you would change.
Example – How do people act in front of their boss? How they act when they see police car on the side of a highway?

You recognize the presence of a Higher power and it changes your behavior. If we internalized “huwa maAAakum ayna makuntum” – and He is with you wherever you are” there would necessarily be a change in our behavior.

22. Ma’aa = It not just means “with you” – it means “someone is there to support you” ♥ ♥ Rasool Allah  صلى الله عليه وسلم comforted Abu Bakr Siddique in the cave saying “la tahzan inna AllahamaAA’ana = Be not sad (or afraid), surely Allah is with us.”
Allah is with everyone, He subhanahu wata’ala is with Quraish as well but he is “Ma’aa” with the believers.

23. Allah says he owns the heavens and the earth twice – why does someone say something twice?? Allah is talking to those who listen to the ayaat of Qur’an but dont internalize it. The first time Allah mentioned it – it was a statement – the 2nd time it is a threat! All the things we do, they are reported back to Allah.
Example – Listen to me “I am your father!” – Listen to me “I AM YOUR FATHER!!!!” – why did he have to say it twice? Because it is not getting in your head. You don’t show respect!

24. When you internalize all that you do goes back to Allah – your nights and days will change. He knows everything thats deep inside your heart. The evil thoughts you have, the deep temptations. The things you want to say but you dont say – ALLAH KNOWS IT ALL!

25. If we knew what each others evil thoughts were we would run from each other like we have never seen a more evil person. Allah knows who you really.. really… REALLY… are! Even your wife doesn’t know who you really are – your husband doesn’t know who you really are. Husband and wife know each other more than anybody else but even they are surprised to sometimes find “thats who you are?!”. Allah says ‘I know who you really are’.

PLEASE REMEMBER THIS – THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT – People might have a good opinion of you and people might have a bad opinion of you, none of that means anything to Allah. Allah’s opinion of you has nothing to do with people’s opinion of you. If people think you are great that is no guarantee that Allah thinks you are great. NONE!! NONE!! You are kidding yourself. If people think you are terrible… you are going to hell.. you are evil.. that is no guarantee that Allah thinks you are evil ♥ ♥ ♥  😥 Allah still has love for you. What people think of me and what people think of you MEANS NOTHING!! with Allah.. When people praise us and people condemn us we don’t let that make us think ‘O thats how Allah thinks of me’. On one hand people become delusional when people praise them, they think they are praise worthy with Allah – they become delusional – hypocrisy sets in, self righteousness sets in and they lose all ranking with Allah. Then all they get is duniya and people’s praise. And they come in front of Allah and Allah says ‘you got what you were working for – you got nothing with me’ . And on the other hand you have people who may be trying to do good but others judge them and pass verdicts on them, they start thinking ‘people think I am messed up – I must be messed up’. Who told you, you are messed up? Allah dint give up on you – You gave up on yourself. Allah says I dint judge you – I kept the doors of tawba open for you. I had the invitation open – why did you give up on me? Dont blame people, blame yourself.

26. Sometimes we complain – nobody understands me! Don’t worry – Allah understands you perfectly and totally.

27. Revive & rethink your relationship with Allah and his messenger. We need to use the temporary talent and ability granted to us by Allah and spend it in His way. Those who spend in Allah’s way will have HUGE COMPENSATION and that compensation will NOT be temporary – subhanAllah

28. Allah has taken an agreement from all of us. When we said our shahada – when we said “la ilaha illallah muhammadur rasulullah” it was an agreement with Allah! 🙂

29.  HOW WILL I GET EEMAN?? He sends upon his slaves “Qur’an” that makes “Eeman” clear. The qur’an clears the clutter in our hearts, it opens us up. So that Allah can bring us out of darkness into light.

30. This ayah is scary – Usually it is the kafir who is in darkness but here Allah is referring to Muslims. The darkness of a Muslim is “hypocrisy – NIFAQ”. Allah sends ayaat not only for non muslims to become muslims but also for muslims to become mumin.

It is He who sends down upon His Servant [Muhammad] verses of clear evidence that He may bring you out from darknesses into the light. And indeed, Allah is to you Kind and Merciful.
(Surat Al Hadid 57:9)

31. If you say you have a weak eeman, you must have a weak relationship with Qur’an to have a weak eeman.

Allah gave us qur’an so that we can keep our eeman fresh. The most valuable treasure we have is eeman in our hearts. If we have eeman in our hearts & everything else can go and we are ok, and if we don’t have eeman in our hearts you can have everything in your head and nothing is ok. We are going to go in front of Allah bankrupt!

Anything worthy that we can show Allah on the day of judgement is EEMAN…
Allah says
‘Illa man ata Allahabiqalbin saleem – Except him who brings to Allah a clean heart [clean from Shirk (polytheism) and Nifaq (hypocrisy)’
[Surat Ash-Shu’ara 26:89]

32. Allah gave us necessary exercise for everyday in which we use this book and clean our rusty heart again and again and again – SALAAT – it is a mechanism through which our heart is cleansed.

33. Allah has a special place for muslims who live in difficult times and then spent. Who live in the midst of fitna and yet practice Islam. And spending just doesnt just mean money, it means time, it means priority, it means weekends and weeknights, early mornings etc,.

  • Al Waqi’ah is a Meccan Surah.

He said, “What is hurting?” He said, “My sins.” He said, “What do you need?” He said, “The mercy of my Lord.” He said, “Shall we not call the doctor for you?” He said, “The doctor made me ill.” He said, “Shall I order that your regular income [from the state] be restored to you?” He said, “You did not let me have it before today and I have no need of it now.” He said, ‘Then leave it to your family and dependents.” He said, “I have taught them something which, if they say it, they will never become poor. I heard the Messenger of Allaah(peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say, ‘Whoever recites al-Waaqi’ah every night will never become poor.” (Narrated by al-Bayhaqi in Shu’ab al-Eemaan, 2/491. This hadeeth was classed as da’eef by Shaykh al-Albaani in al-Silsilah al-Da’eefah, 289).

Summary of 14 Ayahs

Allah tells us when the day of judgment occurs there will be nothing to reverse it – there will be no going back from this catastrophe!! (May Allah safeguard and protect us – ameen)
3rd Verse needs detailing..
Surah Al Waqi’ah 56 : Verse 3
It will bring down [some] and raise up [others]
On that day many things will fall and many things will raise
– The Sun will fall.
– The Mountains will fall, crumble, become dust and get scattered.
– Buildings & high structures will become flat
– The Deep oceans will rise.
– People buried under the earth will rise and come out.
The other interpretation is with regards to the status of  the people..
– A king high and mighty in this world might be in a low condition on that day.
– Where as a poor beggar who was righteous may be given the status of a king. The powerful, arrogant, unjust and mighty will become powerless and weak and the ones oppressed, denied and humiliated will be honored and raised in ranks.

QURANIC GEM : Qur’an presents to us in many places the imagery of the day of judgement. The believers will be elevated and will be looking down upon the kuffar. The highest rank or station will that be of Prophet Muhammad salallahu aleyhi wasallam – The Quran describes it as “Maqaman Mahmudan – The Station worthy of praise”.
REFLECTION :There are many instances when we feel betrayed, when we ask why dint Allah give me justice, where we think “we deserved something” and yet were denied. Some times in life even after doing everything right the blessing doesn’t come and hardship isn’t lifted and this ayah might just be the reason. Because to begin with – this duniya was never the ground for settling scores – akhira is the place of justice where our wages will be paid in full. Denying in this world might just mean that Allah is raising our ranks in the akhira. If something you asked for dint come true dont lose hope and be sure that if your deeds and duas are sincere your ranks are being raised in the akhira inshaAllah

Then we are told how the earth will shake with immense severity, the mountains will crumble down to become dust and get dispersed. The entire humankind on that day will be divided into 3 groups

  1. Those who will be handed their book of deeds in their right hands – the righteous companions and they will be happy.
  2. Those who will be handed their book of deeds in their left hands – the evil ones who will enter hell.
  3. The fore runners – The best and the most righteous group – they will be brought near Allah in the garden of paradise. The fore runners will mostly be from among the first generations and a very few from the latter generations.

Dua tip –  Do not make dua to get your books in your right hands – rather make dua that Allah makes you from among the “fore runners on the day of judgement”. May Allah make us from among the fore runners on the day of judgement ameen ya rabbi!!

What is the difference between left hand companions, right hand companions and the fore runners?
1. Left Hand Companions – FAIL!
2. Right Hand Companions – PASS!
3. Sabiqun – The fore runners – A+!! 😀 🙂

Ramadan Quran Memorization Challenge – Day 10

Ramadan Quran Memorization ChallengeSurah Ar Rahman (Verses 15 – 28)

Names of Allah Learnt

  1. Dhu-al-jalal wa-al Ikram : The Lord of Majesty and Bounty.

10 Arabic Words Memorized

  1. Khalaqa – Created.
  2. Salsalin – Clay.
  3. Narin – Fire.
  4. Rabbu – Lord.
  5. Warabbu – And Lord.
  6. Maghribayni – (of) the two wests.
  7. Lu-lu-u – The Pearl.
  8. Marjan – The Coral.
  9. Bahri – The Sea.
  10. Kullu – Everyone.

Jinn were created from fire. Allah is the master of the east and the west. We are made to ponder over and appreciate the rising of the sun, the changing of the seasons. Allah then talks about how two water bodies crash together but do not mix. The sweet and the salt water that is.
sweet and salt waterThis shows us how everyone is obeying Allah and how they do not cross the boundaries set by Allah.
(A very important point to note here is that prophet Muhamamd salallahu aleyhi wasallam dint go and travel over the sea to witness the above – This is a clear proof against those who say Prophet Muhammad wrote The Qur’an – Allah told him so and he is indeed our creator’s messenger! salallahu aleyhi wasallam)
Allah tells us how pearls come out of both the waters. The visual contrast of this verse and the next is beyond amazing! Allah just informed us that there are pearls resting on the bed of the ocean (very tiny) and now Allah is telling us how ships float over water.
1. Tiny pearl at the bottom of the ocean.
2. Big, massive, huge and gigantic ships floating over the ocean.
Logically what should be sinking and what should be floating?? THE REVERSE! SUBHAN ALLAH!!
After this powerful imagery we are told how everything will cease to exist and how only the face of our lord will remain. By nature, no matter what big things we or others achieve – there is an expiry date – there is a life span – everything will end or die.
1. Steve Jobs.
2. Titanic.
3. The Twin Towers.
4. Firawn.
5. Prophet Muhammad!!
This logic and nature of withering away, perishing and dying applies to individuals, civilizations and nations!! And if we reflect further this logic applies even to our statuses – one day people respect us and the other day Allah can totally turn the tables and the very same people who used to love and respect us can become our haters and enemies!

  6. Fakayfa – and how.
  7. Illa – Except.
  8. Shayin – Thing.
  9. Hadha – This.
  10. Siratin Mustaqim – (the) Path – Straight.

Gist (Verses 16-30)

Allah questions if we feel secure from His warnings with a reminder of the disbelief of the previous generations, their downfall and the punishment that befell upon them. Allah reminds us of His mercy through the parable of birds flying in the air. Allah tells us that He is our sole helper and that the disbelievers are in a delusion. Allah alone can provide or withhold our provision.
The followers of the straight path are guided. Allah brings to account how He created us, gave us hearing and sight, mutliplied us and that to Him is our return. When questioned by the disbelievers about the day of judgment, prophet salallahu aleyhi wasallam is commanded to reply that only Allah has knowledge of that day. The horror of disbelievers is described and the last ayah ends with a rhetoric question.

Reliance on Allah : Calling out to Allah during Hardship

Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “Duas and ta’awwudhaat [prayers seeking refuge with Allah] are like a weapon, and a weapon is only as good as the person who is using it; it is not merely the matter of how sharp it is. If the weapon is perfect and free of faults, and the arm of the person using it is strong, and there is nothing stopping him, then he can lay waste the enemy. But if any of these three features is lacking, then the effect will be lacking accordingly.”

Al-Daa’ wa’l-Dawaa’, p. 35 ).

As salamu aleycum all 🙂

Following are some of the duas that have personally moved and helped me.
May Allah Bless Shaykh Hasan Ali for this beautiful and immensely beneficial talk.
If you guys maintain a Dua Diary make sure you note the following duas down and make a habit of calling upon Allah through them at least once a day.

1. The Dua of Yunus
la ilaha illa anta subhanaka inneekuntu mina aththalimeen
“There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.”
(Surah Al Anbya 21:87)

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “The supplication of my brother Dhun Nun (Yunus, peace be upon him), who called on Allah while in the whale’s belly: ‘There is no deity but You. Glory be to You! Verily, I have been among the wrongdoers’ (Quran 21:87) – no Muslim person says it, for any situation whatsoever, except that Allah Most High answers his call.” [Tirmidhi]

The ayah following the dua of Yunus alyehi salaam – Allah subhanahu wata’ala mentions in the very next ayah i.e., (Surah Al-Anbya 21:88)21:88Transliteration – Fastajabna lahu wanajjaynahumina alghammi wakathalika nunjee almu/mineen
Sahih International – So We responded to him and saved him from the distress. And thus do We save the believers.
Muhsin Khan – So We answered his call, and delivered him from the distress. And thus We do deliver the believers (who believe in the Oneness of Allah, abstain from evil and work righteousness).
Pickthall – Then we heard his prayer and saved him from the anguish. Thus we save believers.
Yusuf Ali – So We listened to him: and delivered him from distress: and thus do We deliver those who have faith.
Shakir – So We responded to him and delivered him from the grief and thus do We deliver the believers.
Dr. Ghali – So We responded to him and safely delivered him from suffering; and thus do We deliver the believers.
~Admit your faults in front of the mighty one.
~Allah loves us.
~While we sin He still feeds us,clothes us, has blessed us with a wife, husband, children and gives us salary at the end of the month.
~He has blessed us with 100’s and 1000’s of blessings, blessings we can never count or be thankful enough for! – (Surah An-Nahl 16:18)16:18Transliteration – Wa-in taAAuddoo niAAmata Allahi latuhsooha inna Allaha laghafoorun raheem
Sahih International – And if you should count the favors of Allah , you could not enumerate them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

2. Dua of Nuh – During Political Situations
Rabbahu annee maghloobun fantasir
“I have been overcome, so help (me)!”
(Surah Al-Qamar 54:10)
~Family political situation.
~Gaza,Palestine,Syria,Kashmir,Pakistan oppression.
~Make sure you put your faith in the dua and be positive that Allah will answer it.
~Have Yaqeen and Tawakkul-this is going to happen! Dont say i dont know if this is going to work. If you are not committing any major sins it will work – bi’ithinillah.
~Possible and Impossible are the ideas of human brain. For Allah everything and anything is possible.

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH), “The supplication of every one of you will be granted if he does not get impatient and say (for example): `I supplicated my Rubb but my prayer has not been granted‘.”
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

3. Dua of Muhammad and his companions when threatened by the impending attack of the enemy and Of Ibrahim when he was thrown in fire
HasbunaAllahu waniAAma alwakeel
Sufficient for us is Allah , and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs.
(Surah Ali’Imran 3:173)3:173
~No person by himself is capable of fighting against the current of misfortune, nor can he fend off the blows of disaster when they strike. This is because man was created weak and fragile. However, when in times of difficulty, the believer places his dependancy and trust with his Lord; he knows that all difficulties can be overcome.
~By leaving your affairs to Allah, by depending upon Him, by trusting in His promise, by being pleased with His decree, by thinking favourably of Him, and by waiting patiently for His help, you reap some of the greater fruits of faith and display the more promonent characteristics of the believer. When you incorporate these qualities into your character, you will be at peace concerning the future, because you will depend on your Lord for everything. As a result, you will find care, help, protection, and victory.
~Use this dua when you are in some kind of stress.

4. Dua of Yaqoob
Dua 1: Innama ashkoo baththee wahuzneeila Allahi
I only complain of my suffering and my grief to Allah
(Surah Yusuf 12:86)
Dua 2 : Waofawwidu amree ila Allahi inna Allahabaseerun bilAAibad
And I entrust my affair to Allah . Indeed, Allah is Seeing of [His] servants
(Surah Ghafir 40:44)
**This dua was also made by a man during the time of the Pharaoh**

~ Question yourself – ‘Is not Allah sufficient for His servant?’ (Surah Az Zumar 39:37)

5. Dua of Musa
Rabbiinnee lima anzalta ilayya min khayrin faqeer
My Lord, indeed I am, for whatever good You would send down to me, in need.
(Surah Al Qasas 28:24)

6. Hadith of Rasool Allah

When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would be afflicted with a stressful trial, he would say, “O Living and Eternal Maintainer! By Your mercy I seek help!” [Sunan Tirmidhi]

Ya Hayyu Ya Qayyum! Bi rahmatika astagheeth!

~ Call upon Allah by his names Ya Hayyu Ya Qayyum.
