Lessons From Surah Ar Rahman – Nouman Ali Khan

NOTES / GEMS

1. First few ayaat are very emotional and every muslim should have an emotional connection with these ayaat (U.NAK will be discussing only first few ayaat).

2. The best way to remember talks and gems about suwar (pl. of surah) is to memorize them.

3. There are 3 ingredients of effective communication
a) Content – What are you going to say? (Something meaningful/true/beneficial and purposeful).
b) Style – How do you say it?
c) Know who you are talking to – Talking to ones child and ones father is different.

“THE QUR’AN” the speech of Allah is “THE PERFECT SPEECH”. It is the best communication in existence. Nobody communicates better than Allah. As a consequence 3 things result – Allah has the best content, the best style and He swt is always considerate of his audience.

4. Allah has different ways of addressing specific people in the qur’an :
a) Christians
b) Jews
c) Mushrikoon 1st year of seerah
d) Mushrikoon 10th year of seerah, etc,.

5. MOST IMPORTANT QUESTIONWho is Allah talking to in Surah Ar Rahman? Difference of opinion – most say late Mecci and some say early Madani. In late Meccan period surah was addressed to stubborn arabs who were fed up of the message of Islam being repeated to them for nearly 10 yrs now and hence the refrain “fabiyyi ayyi aala ee rabbikum tukadhibaan”. Because when someone is irritated and angry you need to repeat things to them hoping it will strike or come under their notice atleast once. The refrain and style is rightfully so to address the “stubborn uninterested arabs”.

6.  5 Main subjects of Surat Al Waqiah
~ 1. As sabiqoon – The forerunners
~ 2. Ashabul Yameen – People of the Right Hand (got book of deeds in their R.H)
~ 3. Ashabul shimaal – People of the Left Hand (got book of deeds in their L.H)
~ 4. Allah’s Creation – A list of things that only Allah can do and we cannot do – “germination of seeds”,”rain”, etc,.
~ 5. The Greatness of Qur’an – Entire passage dedicated to describing greatness of qur’an in the end of surat al waqi’ah.

7. The order of Surat Al Waqi’ah is reversed in Surat Ar Rahman
~ 1. The Great of Qur’an – Allamal Qur’an
~ 2. Allah’s Creation – Ash shamsu wal qamaru
~ 3. The Criminals who will end up in hell fire on the DOJ
~ 4. A beautiful Jannah for a group of people (Jannah Regular lol)
~ 5. A much better Jannah (Jannah Delux package lol)

8. This is how Allah teaches us things in the qur’an if you remember the order of surah waqiah there is noway you will forget whats happening in surah ar rahman.

9. This surah is special for many reasons but one of the reasons is that this surah starts with just one word “Ar Rahman” which is a verse in itself and is not a mutashabihat “Alif laam meen”.

10. Ar rahman allamal qur’an is actually one sentence linguistically but Allah broke it up. It is because Allah wants us to reflect and think just about AR-RAHMAN. You should not think about “Allalamal Qur’an” until you stop and reflect just about ar-rahman.

11. Ar Rahman is different from Mercy. Ar Rahman comes from Ar Raham. When a women is pregnant her stomach is called raham – because that baby is taken care of in EVERYWAY!
Points for reflection
( subhanAllah 😥 )
a) Does the child have love for mother? Does the mother have love for her child?
b) Does the child know the mother? Does the mother already know the child?
c) Mother is taking care of the child in everyway.
d) Mother is extra cautious about her stomach – keeps it away from pointed corners – away from narrow lanes.
This entire thing is related to rahma. Mercy is used in english usually when you “spare” someone.
Ex. I was gonna beat you up but I showed you mercy.

12. Rahma HAS NOTHING TO DO with punishment. The thought should not even cross your mind. Rahma is someone who wants to be
a) Compassionate.
b) Soft.
c) Easy.
d) Wants to make things easy for you.
e) They understand you should be handled with care.
f) To show love.

When Allah says He is Ar Rahman he means He loves you, He cares for you, He understands that you must be handled with care. He is not going to leave you. He is not going to adandon you. A mother will never abandon her child.
“Walillahil mathalul-ala – And for Allah is the highest attribute”
(Surah An Nahl 16:60)
😥

13. Ar Rahman is called “Sigatul Mubâlaghah” in Arabic Language. What that means is something that is “excessive and unusual”. This is the absolute extreme of being merciful. Some scholars say Ar rahman means “Allah is being merciful RIGHT NOW!”.

Sometimes we feel, ALLAH DOESNT CARE ABOUT ME! Why do I have all these problems? It means you have not thought about Ar Rahman enough. You dont have to wait for His care to come, its already there.

14. The last ayah of this surah Allah says: Tabaraka ismu rabbika theealjalali wal-ikram Blessed is the name of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honor. (Ar Rahman 55:78) Allah is saying the name of Allah is full of barakah. Allah is telling us Ar Rahman -the name I (meaning Allah) began this surah with is full of barakah. You don’t use dhul jalal for anyone other than Allah.

15. WHAT IS BARAKAH? They say in arabic “Al barakatu an nama’oo waz-ziyada”. Barakah first of all means growth, something that rises, progress, an increase, above and beyond, above expectation. Barakah is something like an overly high lego tower (which ofcourse will be unstable) but is as stable as a camel sunk in the sand. *subhanAllah*
Ex. You put 1 seed in the ground how many seeds do you expect? 1 – but if 10 pop out thats what you call barakah.

Barakah will not go away its not unstable increase. Allah says His name is full of barakah – what does that really mean? When we say Ar Rahman and do something with Allah’s name calling on the barakah of Allah’s name – whatever we do will produce good but it will produce good more than expected and the growth will continue and not disappear.

16. Because of this one ayah every muslim should be an optimist we can never be pessimists. The barakah of doing one good deed cannot be seen. When you begin something with bismillah hir rahman nir rahmeen the barakah & the results you cannot calculate and they will grow and grow beyond human expectation. You cannot encompass it.

17. Personal Story of Barakah (Time 46:57 – 49:33). DONT UNDERESTIMATE THE VALUE OF THE THINGS THAT YOU DO.

18. 2nd Ayah – Allamal Qur’an. Ayah 2 and 3 together are explained first. In Surah A’la Allah says in these ayaat – He talks about Himself and then He says He created and then He talked about guidance. 87:1-3 19. Again in another surah – Allah is the one who created me and then he guides me. Again the same pattern creation is mentioned first and then guidance.
{Surat Ash-Shu`arā’ 26: Verse 78}.

20. Whereas in Surah Ar rahman there is a difference. Allah mentions guidance first and then creation. It is unusual because the order of things is Allah created us and then He guided us. I will not answer than question right now – keep thinking about it – Ustadh Nouman.

21. Please pay attention to this part – Rasool Allah ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) was the best teacher there ever was and even in the future there will never be a teacher like rasool Allah ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him). And in education you need excellent teacher and excellent curriculum and you will never find a better curriculum than the qur’an! You have the best teacher you have the best curriculum and the students were quraish and the lessons were easy.

22. If someone asked me to summarize Meccan qur’an in 5 minutes, I would say I dont need 5 minutes – 1 minute is enough.
What is Meccan Qur’an
a) Allah is One.
b) Dont be like previous nations who dint believe in Allah.
c) Believe in His messenger ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him).
d) Believe in Akhira.
e) Be a servant and slave to Allah.

23. Rasool Allah ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) taught the quraish these simple lessons for 12 years again and again in their very own language. They kept rejecting the best message there ever will be in their very own language! Does Allah have a right to be angry? Yes, any normal teacher would be angry. The quraish are stubborn they are making fun of the ayaat and fun of the teacher. Does Allah have a right to be angry? Yes! And when Allah gets angry what does He have the power to do? SUBHAN ALLAH! (He has the power to punish and perish everything which He has done to previous nations)

24. The most offensive things that the quraish came up with in the end is they asked rasool Allah ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) to hurry up and bring the punishment and the day of judgement. They said we have been listening to it for 10 years now. If you dont have something to show me dont waste my time. I will believe it when I see it. The beginning of this surah is the answer to this problem.

25. Malaysia has a traffic problem yeah? If the radio tells you 2kms away from where you are an accident took place and there is a huge traffic, if you can take an exit take it. Thats what the radio tells you. Do you see the accident? No – But do you take the exit?? Yes. Why? because news came to you from a reliable source, the reporter sees something you don’t see. You dont say arh these radio people “I will believe it when I see it”.

26. Allah created human beings. They are able to understand things even if they have not seen it. Animals are not like that. Animal behaves only when he sees, a human being behaves when he/she understands. If humans say “I will believe it when I see it” then you are acting like a goat or an animal.

27. A teacher has the right to get angry but Allah called himself Ar Rahman first 😥

Allah is the teacher who has the kind of love, care and concern and “MERCY!” on top of all of that even for the people who hate His messenger. He taught them the qur’an even when they insulted the messenger. He taught the qur’an even when they tried to kill the messenger. He taught the qur’an when they killed innocent people infront of him ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him). When they made fun of the ayaat when they rejected one surah He revealed another and another and another and another and because He kept on revealing it’s a proof that He is AR RAHMAN! Because if He was not Ar Rahman this would not have happened.

What we are learning in this surah from the very begining is that qur’an came down from Allah as an act of love. You want to know the love and care of Allah? STUDY THE QUR’AN. Learn the qur’an and you will get to know something you dint know before.

28. My Message to you tonight : You have to build a personal relationship with the qur’an. If you want to experience what Ar Rahman means then you have to become the student of the qur’an.

29. Allama means to deliver knowledge over a long period of time. There is no rush. Learn small bits at a time but continuously. The best student of the qur’an in history is rasool Allah himself ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him).

Rasool Allah ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) is the best student as well as the best teacher. And as a student Allah taught him for how long? 23 YEARS! Dont feel initimated by qur’an.

30. A little bit of qur’an at a time is all what Allah is asking of us. Specially for young people when you have a daily relationship with qur’an with understanding it will change the way you think. It will change the kind of friends you have. It will change what you want to do with your spare time. It will make you people of vision. We need young muslims who will be people of vision.

We have to reconnect with the book, this is a very serious obligation we have in the ummah to help the people come closer to this book. And not scare people from this book and push them away from this book. You don’t have to be a faqeeh or alim to be a da’ee. Share something of the book of Allah with others.

HOW HONORED ARE WE THAT OUR TEACHER IS ALLAH!

31. Allah did not close the invitation even to the worst kuffar how can we close the invitation from our fellow muslim brothers and sisters. How can sisters who wear hijab look at those who dont wear hijab with hateful eyes?

32. Khalaqal Insaan – Ibn Faris argues that Insaan can either be from nasiya which means forgetful or ether from oons which means which means human beings are very loving.
So there are 2 meanings to human beings/Insaan
a) That we are forgetful.
b) That we have love.

33. Allah choose this message perfectly for people who are forgetful and for those who love. And what does a forgetful person need? Reminders! And one of the names of qur’an is reminder. Insaan/forgetful -> needs -> qur’an/reminders.

Allah is saying I taught the qur’an because you are insaan. You forget so that is why I gave you reminder. Second meaning of Insaan is someone who has alot of love. If you have a hole in your heart that needs to be filled this word of Allah will fill it.

34. The word of Allah is the highest there is nothing higher than the word of Allah.

Wakalimatu Allahi hiyaalAAulya The word of Allah – that is the highest {Surat At Tawbah 9: Verse 40}

IF ALLAH CALLED HIMSELF A TEACHER WHO WOULD REFUSE TO BE A STUDENT?! 😥

35. When you begin your learning with Ar Rahman there will be barakah in your learning and you will learn like you have never learned before. Be students of arabic don’t be intimated by it.

What is so special about me?

“What’s so special about me?”—That you exist, as you are, out of the infinite alternatives that could have been, including your absence.
– Shaykh Musa Furber

Surat Taha 20 : 41

AND I HAVE CHOSEN YOU FOR MYSELF – Tafsir and Gems
Ayah number 41 in my humble opinion is one of the most powerful ayaat in the qur’an. Istina means to design to customize. Allah is saying he has customized us for him. This is what you were made for, we need to understand that we were meant to serve Allah. In whatever capacity that may be serving the deen of Allah (small capacity or a huge capacity) – we were meant for that. We were made by Allah and for Allah – for his blessed mission and His task! Allah says, ‘I have manufactured you to perfection. You have come up exactly the way ‘I’ wanted. Allah (azwajjal) takes pride in His development of our being and personality.
– Tafsir of this verse by Shaykh Abdul Nasir Jangdha

♥ ♥ PLEASE REMEMBER THIS – THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT ♥ ♥
People might have a good opinion of you and people might have a bad opinion of you, none of that means anything to Allah. Allah’s opinion of you has nothing to do with people’s opinion of you. If people think you are great that is no guarantee that Allah thinks you are great. NONE!! NONE!! You are kidding yourself. If people think you are terrible… you are going to hell.. you are evil.. that is no guarantee that Allah thinks you are evil ♥ ♥ ♥  😥 Allah still has love for you. What people think of me and what people think of you MEANS NOTHING!! with Allah.. When people praise us and people condemn us we don’t let that make us think ‘O thats how Allah thinks of me’. On one hand people become delusional when people praise them, they think they are praise worthy with Allah – they become delusional – hypocrisy sets in, self righteousness sets in and they lose all ranking with Allah. Then all they get is duniya and people’s praise. And they come in front of Allah and Allah says ‘you got what you were working for – you got nothing with me’ . And on the other hand you have people who may be trying to do good but others judge them and pass verdicts on them, they start thinking ‘people think I am messed up – I must be messed up’. Who told you, you are messed up? Allah dint give up on you – You gave up on yourself. Allah says I dint judge you – I kept the doors of tawba open for you. I had the invitation open – why did you give up on me? Dont blame people, blame yourself.

Bayyinah Tv / Ramadan – Day 3+4 – Surah Al Hadid Part 2

Screen Shot 2013-10-04 at 12.15.33 AM

Days 3 and 4 of the Ramadan 2013 Program bring the second of two parts of an exclusive session conducted by Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan on Surah Al-Hadid, which will set the stage for the Musabbihat (3 special surahs) coming up as this month progresses.

NOTES / GEMS

1. Allah has full news of what you are upto.

2. Man tha allathee yuqriduAllaha qardan hasanan fayudaAAifahulahu walahu ajrun kareem – Who is it that would loan Allah a goodly loan so He will multiply it for him and he will have a noble reward? (Surat Al Hadid 57 : Verse 11) The “tha” in the above ayah means “is there anyone at all who will rise up to the occasion?” It implies that Allah azza ja wa jal is literally searching for someone like this.

Surat Al Hadid 57:11 3. After telling us, that Allah is the owner of everything and anything possible in the heavens and in the earth, why is Allah asking for a loan? Loan is given to someone who does not have anything right? ( After this question – Ustadh Nouman mentioned something so powerful I will be transcribing it word to word)

Why is Allah asking for a Loan? You have to understand this is a matter of integrity. INTEGRITY! In order to help you understand this,I will give you an example it is gonna hurt. Example– If my mother comes to me, my mother comes to me and says “beta can i borrow 100$? I promise, I will pay it back,I dont know when I will be able to pay it back but I promise I will pay you back, can I borrow just a 100$ please?”  If my mother had to say that to me,man…. if there was ever a time I would contemplate suicide that would be it. How insensitive and greedy and oblivious to the needs of my mother must I be and how greedy must she think I am that instead of telling me “give me a 100$!” she had to say what? “Let me borrow a 100$” and on top of that she had to say “I dont know when I will be able to pay you back but I promise you I will”. She must be talking like this because she thinks I am SO! greedy! I am SO! greedy! I dont even respect my mother enough – that she is asking me like this. Now Allah is asking the greedy Muslim who is holding onto his money like it is his and so Allah says to him okay you dont wanna let it go, atleast give me what? Give me a loan, I will pay you back.  The believer should hear these ayat… and.. YA ALLAH…. I am not that greedy… I will give.. I will give…

4. The loan to Allah is open ended, He azza wa jal will pay us back whenever He wants. We just need to trust Him subhanahu wa’atala that He will pay us back. Allah will give us back extra coupled with “noble ajar”.

5. What was happening when these verses were revealed? The companions were listening and crying (reflecting on the state of their emaan) and the prophet salallahu aleyhi wasallam is feeling bad for his companions. The believers are being scolded by prophet through the words of Allah (Qur’an).

6. ALLAH HONORS MUSLIM WOMEN PARTICULARLY IN THE QUR’AN!
SubhanAllah and the haters say Muslim women are oppressed!?!
Surah Al Hadid 57 : Verse 12 Yawma tara almu/mineena walmu/minat
In this verse Allah is saying “Mumineen” and “Muminat”. Linguistically Mumineen means both male and female believers, then why did Allah mention muminat? Why dint He swt just say mumineen in the ayaat and proceed. Allah is highlighting muminat (Female believers particularly), in this way Allah is specially honoring Muslim Women! Allah is saying their level of emaan and stand might be different on the day of judgment (tears of joy!! 🙂 🙂 ) their struggles may be different. Allah is acknowledging that the struggles of Muslim women may be higher and different and so will be their stand on the day of judgement – subhanAllah!

7. The day of judgment is dark – we have to cross the bridge of sirat (everyone has to cross it -no exception) to reach to jannah our REAL HOME! – What will help us? The light that emanates because of the emaan in our hearts! (U.NAK reminds of how he earlier taught us that the only thing that matters is eeman in our hearts nothing else). Our Emaan/Faith will be converted to a torch lighting our path ahead towards jannah! (inshaAllah!)

Wa-in minkum illa wariduha – And there is none of you except he will come to it. [Surat Al Maryam 19:71]

8. Light will be running through our RIGHT HAND and our CHEST. Light from the RIGHT HAND will be because of our deeds and from our CHEST will be because of our emaan.Allah subhanahu wata’alaa never exclusively mentions light of hand or light of chest these two lights are always mentioned together.

9. MIND BLOWING GEM : So why is it that Allah mentions both the lights together “always”? Because it is impossible to have the light of emaan in your heart and to not make it obvious through actions/change/deeds. *pause here for some serious reflection* Example: Brother I have Eeman in my heart – I don’t pray though. See if this works for you on the judgement day. Because according to Qur’an you either have both or NOTHING!

10. For some of us the light will extend only for a few feet and for some it will run forward and be unlimited.

11. Allah congratulates the ones who make it to jannah. The word “jannatun” in Ayah 12 means that the people of jannah will be able to see “multiple gardens” which is possible only in jannah. In duniya we can never see more than one garden. You dont see just one property that belongs to you – YOU SEE MULTIPLE PROPERTIES TOGETHER! (Ust.NAK compares this with the man in surah Kahf who had 2 gardens and could see only 1 at a time). In surah Kahf its not Jannat.

12. On the day of judgment prophet will not be pained by the sight of munafiqeen, he will only be able to see the believers.

13. SCARY GEM : In this verse Allah highlights hypocritical women the way he praised the believing women (In verse 12). Allah is saying the hypocrisy, ego and emotions of hypocritical women is different than that of hypocritical men. It may be higher and their punishment might be greater and higher as well. Just the way Allah went out of the way to praise believing women he went out of the way to codemn hypocritical women. “Yawma yaqoolu almunafiqoona walmunafiqat – On the [same] Day the hypocrite men and hypocrite women” [Surat Al Hadid 57:13]

14. The disbelievers want to share the light of the believers but they will be told off and will be asked “to go back and seek light” (go back where? go back to duniya and see if you can find any light – this is said in a sarcastic way). All of your priorities+exhaustion and thoughts were about duniya, go and get your light from there!

15. Since the disbelievers cannot go back to duniya they try to catch up with the believers moving towards jannah and then suddenly a wall is dropped infront of them which has a “door”. The door is for people who will burn in hellfire for thousands for years and may be they had a little eeman, it is through this door that they will go back to jannah. This door might open for some eventually but they have to pay their price in hell.

16. One side of the wall is rahma (hidden side) and the other side is punishment (obvious side). The hypocrites call out to disbelievers for help through the wall.
Examples: Hey we went to the same masjid together, We played ball together why are you ditching us now.

17. The hypocrites did deeds they knew will take them away from Allah, they put themselves in fitna, they put themselves in questionable circumstances! They partied, they indulged in haraam stuff, they delayed their tawbah (Excuses:Ramadan is 3 months away man dont pester me, In Ramadan – it is not the 27th yet chill…, Don’t worry I am going to hajj next year cut me slack bro).

Alcohol and gambling are not just haraam, they are abominations and evils from the work of shaytan. Pork is haraam but they are not evil, they are just animals. Alcohol and gambling are evil!! Not every haraam is equal these are special haraam categories.

18. When you keep putting things to a later date shaytan fills you with delusions and false hopes. Until death comes and all the justifications and excuses disappear!!

19. In the akhira the munafiqoon (the hypocrite muslims) will be put in the same category as kafir (May Allah protect and guide us and keep us away from hypocrisy). No ransom will be accepted from the hypocrite believers or the unbelievers by Allah on the day of judgement.

Allah might possibly (not gauranteed He might out of his rehma) forgive other sins but shirk He will not forgive.

20. Allah is telling prophet that he will not forgive the hypocrites even if the prophet asks 70 times for their forgiveness. Munafiq is a kind of mushrik – he commits HIDDEN SHIRK.
a) Shirk in Tawakkul – His expectations are from other than Allah.
b) Shirk an Eemaani –   His hopes are from other than Allah.
c) Shirk ut-Taa’ah – His obedience is from other than Allah – he obeys himself and his desires and NOT ALLAH.

21. 16th ayah is the one I wanted to talk to you about – U.NAK
57:16

22. Hasnt the time come ALREADY?! Isnt it time right now?! LAM in the ayah means wasnt it it time right now – WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? It means you are already late!

Is it not time for those who claim to have eeman, that their hearts should over flow with tears? With overwhelming sense of awe and amazement? You should become humble and that power should drive you to remember Allah.

23. Time is already up. The time is RIGHT NOW to get back to Qur’an and Allah.

24. Our hearts should be filled with awe due to the remembrance of Allah. It also means the other way round our hearts should also be filled with awe because WE DID NOT remember Allah the way he deserved to be remembered.

The hearts of believers should flood with tears because of Qur’an. The believers should long for Qur’an. Our hearts should be filled with overwhelming sense of emotion that we have not connected with the Qur’an yet.

25. What came down i.e, qur’an is worthy of time and attention. It has rights over you. Qur’an is not just a casual read. It is going to come after you. You owe it. Every opportunity the believer gets to get closer to the Qur’an he/she if they have understood this ayah will take it.

26. Allah is telling us it’s time for us to stop acting like those who were given books before, the failed nations who had ritualistic and no real relation with their books. Our hearts are becoming like rocks – WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? Our hearts are becoming like rocks because we are acting like the previous nations. Those who had the books, who knew how to recite, they read it but never knew what it meant. Our hearts are becoming like rocks.

27. They had taurat and injeel but they did not benefit from it.
Similar examples of Muslims these days
a) Imam saab I have fever which surah should I recite?
b) Imam saab my daughter is getting married which surah should I recite after the DJ stops playing.
c) What dua should I make from the Qur’an if I am looking for a job?
Did Qur’an come for this?
Or did qur’an come to change us as human beings and to change our hearts and to get us closer to Allah azza wa jal??

28. We are hanging Qur’an in our homes, we are printing it on silk, we are having art exhibits. Blood was spilled for this book. What are we doing with it?!!! Now everything we do with qur’an has become ceremonial.

29. We celebrate when someone memorizes quran and few years down the line when he or she is an adult they still dont know what they are reciting. The one leading taraweeh doesn’t know what he is reciting what do you expect from the congregation?!

30. We are giving our kids artificial goals. The biggest goal in their life is to lead taraweeh.

Qur’an is not a trophy. Huffadh back in the day were called  “Hamil-e-Quran” =”Carriers of Qur’an” because they knew they were carrying a big responsibility.

31. This book will either testify “for” you and me on the judgement day or it will testify “against” us.

IMPORTANT: Download the podcasts and listen to them (http://podcast.bayyinah.com/) it will cost you just your time. At least your salaah will be better, you will know what you are reciting.

32. WHAT MAKES RAMADAN SPECIAL? It is not the pakore or the samose or the fasting. QUR’AN CAME IN IT! The first thing Allah said about ramadan is that qur’an came in it.

Narrated by Abidah al-Mulayki (ra) Allah’s Messenger (saws) said, “Do not make the Qur’an a pillow, but recite it as it deserves to be recited during the night and the day.  Recite it aloud, chant it,  and consider its contents, perhaps you may prosper;  but do not seek to obtain reward for it in this world, for it provides rewards.”
Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 2210

“When you start tasting the recitation of the Qur’an no music will take its place, you will not need to have a fatwa whether music is halal or haraam. Music will become just irrelevant to you because qur’an the divine melody the divine music revealed music that will just flow in your heart and you will never wanna whistle a tune again. Dive and pull out the pearls of Qur’an – so you can become people of success.”
– Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan

Bayyinah Tv / Ramadan – Day 2 – Surah Al Hadid Intro & Part 1

Bayyinah Tv - Ramadan Day 2

Day 2 of the Ramadan 2013 Program brings the first of two parts of an exclusive session conducted by Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan on Surah Al-Hadid, which will set the stage for the Musabbihat (3 special surahs) coming up as this month progresses.

NOTES / GEMS

1. We are starting with Surat Al Hadid the first surah in the Musabbihat series. Surah hadid is not in the memorization plan but it’s dars is important since it lays down the foundation, sets the right tone for other surahs and is the mother of all the musabbihat.

2. This Dars will give you motivation to memorize more Qur’an in ramadan. It has 29 verses and is the 57th Surah in the mushaf. Surat Al-Ĥadīd means “The Iron”.

3. Along with the durus/ lecture of Surat Al Hadid start memorizing Surat Al Jumu’ah. Content and Lesson wise Ustadh NAK wanted to begin with Hadid.

4. Durus of Al Hadid Begins – U.NAK recites 57:1-6 (First 6 verses of Al Hadid)
Screen Shot 2013-09-10 at 6.04.37 PM6. There are 2 kinds of requirements for understanding/benefitting from the Qur’an.
a) Academic – Learning Arabic Language/ Studying Tafsir / Linguistic Analysis / Tradition / things that require you to ‘study’.
b) Psychological / Spiritual (More important than academic) – These requirements are the harder ones.

7. Someone intelligent can memorize, learn and understand qur’an at a great speed but the psychological requirement or the attitude is not something you can learn or keep forever. The attitude to really benefit from the Qur’an is a “LIFE LONG STRUGGLE” – you gotta fight to maintain the spiritual / psychological requirement.

8.  PSYCHOLOGICAL REQUIREMENTS :
*Reminding oneself every single time – why am I learning this? Why am I studying tafsir / learning arabic / memorizing these ayaat? What is the point of all of this? -“INTENTION”
Usually the cliche’ answer is – “So that I may be guided”.
WHAT IS GUIDANCE? Everyday we are presented with choices and guidance is the strength to make the right choice. It means that I have to necessarily change the choices I make. Fight the voice inside us that lead me, you & us to failure.
Ex : Should I watch this or not? / Should I retort back or keep quiet? / Should I sleep or wake up?

We are never going to be good enough to obey Allah, you still have to do it.

9. Shaytan does not spare any of us – no one (student of knowledge/ scholar / novice / expert). Qur’an offers us protection “audhu billah mina ‘sh-shaytani ‘r-rajeem”. Seek refuge in Allah whilst reciting the Qur’an else the shaytan –
a) Mess up your reading of the Qur’an – put waswasa/ distract – you wont get the benefit you need to get.
b) One of the reasons you should recite Qur’an is  to get protection against shaytan.

The actual relationship I have with the Qur’an is not when I am listening to a lecture. It is not when I am memorizing. The actual relationship happens when I am standing in Salaat and reciting it. Standing in salaat listening to it being recited. The relationship we have with the Qur’an happens 5 times a day atleast. If somebody’s salaat is good their Qur’an is good. If someone is not engaging with the Qur’an in their salaat then their relationship with the Qur’an is entirely artificial. IT MEANS NOTHING. It is an entirely academic and superficial exercise. REAL QUR’AN HAPPENS IN SALAAT. Everything I learn and everything you learn about this book whether its tajweed/language/tafsir/memorizing this ayaat all of it comes down to “I WILL HAVE A BETTER SALAAT”. If I don’t have better salaat all of this is in vain none of this matters!! Because salaat is officially when you stop talking to everybody else and start talking to Allah in words He taught me – that’s the conversation that matters everything in life is in vain. IF THIS ISNT IN PLACE!

10. Ustadh planned to talk only about the 16th ayah of Hadid but then decided to start from the beginning and end on ayah 16th.

11. After hijrah there is an over all problem in motivation – the emaan is not what it used to be. And Allah has noticed that there are some weak elements in the muslim community.

12. There is the disease of hypocrisy amongst the companions. The beauty of this surah is even though its Madani the first 6 ayahs sound like they are from the Meccan Quran. These ayaat introduce us to Allah (All competent / All Knowing etc..) when this has already been done in the Meccan Qur’an.

13. These first 6 ayaat are not for academic pre-requisite, the muslims are not going to learn anything new that they don’t already know.

2/3rd of the Qur’an is Meccan and most of the Meccan Qur’an is about Eeman and Allah.

14. It seems that the first 6 ayaat are for quraish and the disbelievers but why is Allah telling this to the muslims who already know all this? ALLAH IS MAKING US THINK AND REFLECT UPON IT AGAIN!! We need to start over..

15. Everything in the sky declares Allah’s perfection – “What is wrong with you”?! “What happened to your tasbih”?
He is the Ultimate Authority – “How come my authority is not enough that you dont respect it”?
Full of Wisdom – “Why dont you trust the things I tell you to do, are good for you, why don’t you have any confidence in my wisdom”?
The kingdom of skies and The Earth belongs to Him – “Why are you afraid of your enemy, they have money, power & weapon in their hands, that it will somehow harm you, there is nothing in the skies and the earth that is out of MY KINGDOM”!!
He gives Life & He gives Death – “Why are you afraid of dying”?
He is control of ALL THINGS – “Allah’s power and might is not restrained. He can DO ANYTHING”!

16. We usually call “My Life” – I WANNA LIVE MY LIFE! – Who said its yours? People say “my hand hurts” – its your hand? How much did you pay for it? Where did you get it from, Amazon? 😛 🙂

MY HAND..
MY CAR…
MY LIFE..
MY HOUSE…
HE GIVES LIFE AND HE GIVES DEATH (Referring to Allah)..
NOTHING IS OURS IT IS ALL “HIS”

17. Allah says HE IS THE FIRST AND THE LAST – this has many implications but the least you can do is start and end your day with the thought of Allah. What did I do today for you my master, me this insignificant creature do today for you?

18. Allah is THE ULTIMATELY OBVIOUS – Allah is in the unseen how is He calling himself obvious? The one who believes, they see Allah in everything, they see Allah in His work, creation and planning.
Ex – Something really annoying happens to you – you get stuck in traffic whilst going to an arabic class – you question was this Allah’s plan? Yes, it was. You need to learn patience before you get to learn arabic.

19. The more you describe the greatness of Allah – the more it instills humility inside us. Allah is always with us we are never alone. His company is there He is always watching, observing, testing and protecting constantly. We are NEVER alone.
– I am not alone in a hotel room.
– I am not alone on the Campus.
– I am not alone in a Car.

20.  People who want to look for alien life – who ask “are we alone in this universe?” – we are not alone. And actually we ourselves are aliens 😛 we were sent on this earth. We are not from this place we were sent to this place. If you want to look at aliens look at each other (Lol !! 😀 ). Everyone of you, a part of you is alien. An angel came from the sky and delivered “the rooh” into your mother’s belly.

21. If I realize Allah is with us “The websites we browse will change” – “The phone numbers we dial would change” – EVERYTHING about you would change.
Example – How do people act in front of their boss? How they act when they see police car on the side of a highway?

You recognize the presence of a Higher power and it changes your behavior. If we internalized “huwa maAAakum ayna makuntum” – and He is with you wherever you are” there would necessarily be a change in our behavior.

22. Ma’aa = It not just means “with you” – it means “someone is there to support you” ♥ ♥ Rasool Allah  صلى الله عليه وسلم comforted Abu Bakr Siddique in the cave saying “la tahzan inna AllahamaAA’ana = Be not sad (or afraid), surely Allah is with us.”
Allah is with everyone, He subhanahu wata’ala is with Quraish as well but he is “Ma’aa” with the believers.

23. Allah says he owns the heavens and the earth twice – why does someone say something twice?? Allah is talking to those who listen to the ayaat of Qur’an but dont internalize it. The first time Allah mentioned it – it was a statement – the 2nd time it is a threat! All the things we do, they are reported back to Allah.
Example – Listen to me “I am your father!” – Listen to me “I AM YOUR FATHER!!!!” – why did he have to say it twice? Because it is not getting in your head. You don’t show respect!

24. When you internalize all that you do goes back to Allah – your nights and days will change. He knows everything thats deep inside your heart. The evil thoughts you have, the deep temptations. The things you want to say but you dont say – ALLAH KNOWS IT ALL!

25. If we knew what each others evil thoughts were we would run from each other like we have never seen a more evil person. Allah knows who you really.. really… REALLY… are! Even your wife doesn’t know who you really are – your husband doesn’t know who you really are. Husband and wife know each other more than anybody else but even they are surprised to sometimes find “thats who you are?!”. Allah says ‘I know who you really are’.

PLEASE REMEMBER THIS – THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT – People might have a good opinion of you and people might have a bad opinion of you, none of that means anything to Allah.

26. Sometimes we complain – nobody understands me! Don’t worry – Allah understands you perfectly and totally.

27. Revive & rethink your relationship with Allah and his messenger. We need to use the temporary talent and ability granted to us by Allah and spend it in His way. Those who spend in Allah’s way will have HUGE COMPENSATION and that compensation will NOT be temporary – subhanAllah

28. Allah has taken an agreement from all of us. When we said our shahada – when we said “la ilaha illallah muhammadur rasulullah” it was an agreement with Allah! 🙂

29.  HOW WILL I GET EEMAN?? He sends upon his slaves “Qur’an” that makes “Eeman” clear. The qur’an clears the clutter in our hearts, it opens us up. So that Allah can bring us out of darkness into light.

30. This ayah is scary – Usually it is the kafir who is in darkness but here Allah is referring to Muslims. The darkness of a Muslim is “hypocrisy – NIFAQ”. Allah sends ayaat not only for non muslims to become muslims but also for muslims to become mumin.
~~FOR WEAK MUSLIMS TO BECOME REAL MUMIN~~

It is He who sends down upon His Servant [Muhammad] verses of clear evidence that He may bring you out from darknesses into the light. And indeed, Allah is to you Kind and Merciful.
(Surat Al Hadid 57:9)

31. If you say you have a weak eeman, you must have a weak relationship with Qur’an to have a weak eeman.

Allah gave us qur’an so that we can keep our eeman fresh. The most valuable treasure we have is eeman in our hearts. If we have eeman in our hearts & everything else can go and we are ok, and if we don’t have eeman in our hearts you can have everything in your head and nothing is ok. We are going to go in front of Allah bankrupt!

THE CLOTHES WILL BE GONE
THE CHILDREN WILL BE GONE
THE MONEY WILL BE GONE
THE CARS WILL BE GONE
Anything worthy that we can show Allah on the day of judgement is EEMAN…
Allah says
‘Illa man ata Allahabiqalbin saleem – Except him who brings to Allah a clean heart [clean from Shirk (polytheism) and Nifaq (hypocrisy)’
[Surat Ash-Shu’ara 26:89]

32. Allah gave us necessary exercise for everyday in which we use this book and clean our rusty heart again and again and again – SALAAT – it is a mechanism through which our heart is cleansed.

33. Allah has a special place for muslims who live in difficult times and then spent. Who live in the midst of fitna and yet practice Islam. And spending just doesnt just mean money, it means time, it means priority, it means weekends and weeknights, early mornings etc,.

Those who were handed their book of deeds in their left hand will be under the shade of a black smoke which will not be cold or comforting. Usually a dark black shade is considered a refuge or a protection but such will not be the case. Allah says these were the ones who used to spend offensively without giving a second thought about the poor and needy. These people indulged in shirk, since they never accepted Allah as one true lord they were oblivious of the accountability to their lord and to the needs of others. They used to question and doubt resurrection. They used to joke and mock the prophet salallahu aleyhi wasallam asking..
“Our earliest ancestors are going to be raised?”
Allah instructs prophet Muhammad to reply back to them and to tell them that yes indeed the first and the last of generations is going to be raised on an appointed day. On that day these evil people will be eating from the trees of Zaqqum – it is one of the special trees of the hellfire and they will be filling their stomachs with it.. (May Allah forgive and protect us – ameen ya rabbi!)
– ” Some ulema say that they will have multiple stomachs that Allah will give them to increase them in their torture.”
They will be drinking hot water like mad camels full of thirst.

Lotus trees are known to have alot of thorns but in jannah they wont have any. There will be a tree which will be filled with trees from top to bottom. (Before you on – pause and try to visualize this – SUBHAN ALLAH!)
These trees will provide large and extensive shades and we can hear the soothing sound of rivers and water flowing around.
The fruits there in will be extensive and varied. Allah mentions all fruits will be fresh and in Jannah there will be no forbidden fruit.
WHY IS FORBIDDEN FRUIT MENTIONED?
This teaches us 2 very important points
1. For Adam aleyhi salaam Jannah was a test.
2. When this all ends there will be no more tests.
Our beds, cushions and floors will be raised high. The spouses of Jannah are created in a unique form and they are virgins and previously unmarried. They will be devoted and flirtatious towards their husbands. They will be custom made to attract and retain the love of every man. The spouses will be of equal age and equal intellectual ability. All this is for the people who will be handed their book of deeds in their right hands.
There will be a large number of people from the former and latter generations.
Allah now tells us about the horrifying condition of the people who were handed their book of deeds in their left hands – the ones who failed their test, their fate will be terrible. They will be in
1. Fire.
2. Boiling Hot Water.
3. And in wind that is toxic and which makes you sick.
